"We are on a cultural journey. We apply the grand traditions of Eastern craftsmanship to modern design".
THE BIRTH OF SHANG XIA
In 2008, SHANG XIA was conceived as a concept that merged modern design with traditional Chinese craftsmanship. Hermès and renowned designer Jiang Qiong’er, envisioned blending ancient Chinese culture and artisanal skills with contemporary aesthetics to create a unique home decor and lifestyle brand. Recognizing the alignment in values and the potential of SHANG XIA, Hermès decided to build the brand, marking the beginning of a transformative journey.
The name “SHANG XIA” is rooted in ancient Chinese poetry, symbolizing a bridge between the past and the future, and representing the complementary nature of tradition and modernity.
Our purpose has always been clear: to revive Chinese and Asian culture and handicrafts, merge them with contemporary design, and share exceptional products with the world. We support endangered crafts by helping artisans rebuild their production capacities and developing a robust handicraft industry. This vision required significant effort and financial investment and positions us as a leader in Chinese and Asian craft preservation and innovation.
OUR FIRST COLLECTION
In 2010, after two years of preparation, we officially launched. The first collection included iconic pieces such as the “Sculpture” cashmere felt coat, the “Bridge” Porcelain Tea Set with Bamboo Weaving, and the Da Tian Di furniture collection. Over the next decade, we laid a solid foundation for our future, drawing inspiration primarily from the Han, Song, and Ming dynasties for apparel, utensils, and furniture, respectively. The brand established six categories: furniture, home decor, ready-to-wear, leather goods, jewelry, and accessories, all embodying SHANG XIA’s vision of the “art of life.”
ELEGANT AND TIMELESS DESIGN
Our designs have been collected and exhibited by world-renowned museums, including the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques-Guimet. These designs have also been featured by international auction houses and recognized by authoritative media and influencers. This recognition has solidified our reputation as a brand that seamlessly blends heritage with modernity.
In 2015, We introduced the Da Tian Di carbon fiber chair. The chairs merge Ming-style aesthetics and with cutting-edge technology, design and materials. Despite its thin and lightweight structure, the chair is incredibly strong, symbolizing the perfect blend of classic and contemporary elements. The Da Tian Di chair is a testament to our innovative approach, showcasing how traditional designs can be reinterpreted using advanced materials and techniques.
As we enter our second decade, we reflect on China's growing presence on the global stage. In 2021, we introduced a new logo symbolizing diversity and duality. The brand continues to draw inspiration from Chinese culture, interpreting it in a contemporary context, and valuing both heritage and innovation. Through advanced technologies and traditional craftsmanship, we create products that celebrate China’s magnificent heritage with timeless designs that will be celebrated for generations to come.
Today, our commitment to excellence is evident in every aspect of our operations, from the meticulous selection of materials to the intricate processes involved in creating each piece. By collaborating with master artisans and leveraging state-of-the-art techniques, we ensure that our products are not only beautiful but also functional and durable. Our dedication to preserving traditional crafts while embracing modernity has positioned us as a pioneer in the luxury home decor and lifestyle market, setting new standards for quality and innovation.
